Experimental testing and exploitation of gear pumps show that the increase of pressure reduces the volumetric flow. Therefore, the company “Prva Petoletka” (Trstenik, Serbia) invests continuously in constructive improvements of the gear pumps. Its subsidiary, “Hidraulika” (Trstenik, Serbia), has been producing gear pumps for more than 60 years. This paper analyses the impact of the axial clearance in external gear pumps, by defining the equation for the actual flow rate as a function of pressure. Conducted experimental research should support the mathematical analysis, and point to further constructive and productive improvements, i.e. solutions that will produce maximum volumetric efficiency.
